The LIEBHERR European Championships will be under the patronage of Dr. Wolfgang Schaeuble. He is the Minister of the Interior of the Federal Republic of Germany. "One of my most enjoyable tasks is promoting sport", he says. Through sport "our guests get to know Germany as a welcoming, tolerant, modern as well as innovative and “can-do” country."

It helps the German sports associations with their preparations for international events. Another major task: Ethical, drug-free sport is a precondition for sport subsidization on the part of the Federal Government. This is why it supports the fight against doping in forums such as the National Anti-Doping Agency and the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Besides sport, the Federal Minister of the Interior has a wide variety of responsibilities. The most important of these is guaranteeing the country’s internal security.

Mr. Schaeuble is almost a table tennis expert. At the Olympic Games in Beijing he visited the competitions at the University hall more than once to watch the matches and talk to officials from the German Table Tennis Association.
